Renal Agenesia?

Hi! I would like to know how uncommon it is renal agenesia… I encountered a 14yold FN golden retriever who, as an incidental finding on scan, presents what appears to be a total lack of left renal structures. Initially I thought it was me, then I thought it had to be a nephrotic severely degenerated kidney that I just coul not find… But… I couldn’t find anything in the left area… Finally I realized there was no left renal artery at all and the left ureteric papilla at bladder was also missing… X-rays confirm lack of LK and no abnormal small mass structure is seen in the area…

Has anybody encountered anything like this?

As the there are only a couple of publications in the literature with the first report dating back to 1965, I think that it is fairly rare.

Thanks Remo. I’m trying to think of this dog actually has a kidney… And I missed it:( if so… Considering there is no structure recognizable I would assume there would be a damage of more than 75% of renal tissue and… She should be in renal failure of some kind…
This dog was presented for tenesmus with colitis. Blood work is unremarkable and I am now wondering whether this is a urinary tract issue rather than colon as scan and rectal exam are normal.
Anyway… The owner is a vet student. I hope he gets curious enough to go further in investigation, but I doubt it. A read only exlap would be diagnostic.

I have run into this on

I have run into this on occasion but I do a very large sample volume. Usually I can find a redicual kidney but at times I can find the adrenal and no renal artery or kidney. now I wish I had logged them all but it does happen.
