I have had very poor results using Butorphanol for bad actors when doing an echo. 1/3 of the time the dogs get diarrhea post injection.
What are you all using for sedation that doesn’t affect cardiac values and dosing.
Thanks

Hi Randy

Hi Randy
I have never had diarrhea issues with butorphanol? It usually works really nice 0.2-0.4 mg/kg IV – must go IV to work well though
Gabapentin at 10 – 40 mg/kg is another alternative. Have owner give one dose the night before then 1-2 hours before coming in. Sometimes you need to fine tune as some pets need the higher end of the dose if really stressed.
I dose 50mg in total for cats. I have no idea if gabapentin changes cardiac parameters with any clinical significance however it does seem to work well in stressed patients for echos and other hospital procedures.
Adaptil sprayed blankets (Feliway for cats) and iCalm music can also help
Thanks Jacquie. Maybe I need
Thanks Jacquie. Maybe I need to bump up the dose of Butorphanol.
I have used Gabapentin in cats. May be worthwhile to try in the dogs too.
You cane add a hub of ace to
You cane add a hub of ace to the torb as well. That’s the traditional sedation for cardiac. Curbside guide has a list of the sedation meds as well for sonograms as I think you have it.
