Do you ever feel like you are nebulizing yourself when cleaning your kennel cages? I try to spray down all my cage doors, ceilings, walls, and floors of the kennels and walk away to let it sit, but some of the fumes from the disinfectants that we use are just awful. I’m sure it cannot be good to be huffing these chemicals into your lungs on a daily basis.

- Does anyone have a safer alternative that actually kills all the germs our patient’s and the staff come into contact with but doesn’t irritate your sinuses or lungs?
I have heard of a product called KennelSol that is supposed to be safer for pets, people, and the environment to boot. Has anyone used a product such as this one?

I think a rock star
I think a rock star ventilation system in the clinic, mainly in treatment and hospitalization and wherever there is a cage is likely the best move. I have always wondered this myself even with alcohol use in the clinic…not the margaritas and end of day beer but the one you use before an injection:)

Agreed! That would be great.
Agreed! That would be great. At one clinic I worked at none of the main players were in spray bottles. Alcohol, Peroxide, and even the cage cleaners were in large squirt bottles, much like our SonoPath ultrasound gel bottles. They didn’t spray all over your patient’s face either, (cat’s in particular appreciated this). 🙂

Haven’t used Kennelsol. We
Haven’t used Kennelsol. We use Parvoclear and I rarely notice any problem (or am I just immune at this point?). I do have a tech who is extremely sensitive to odors from products, and she has asthma, and she has not complained about the parvoclear. We don’t use any chemicals on the floors, just vacuum and steam clean every day (AAHA is thrilled with that). Foam Quat is my favorite product to use in a cage which it has been cleaned but still has a bad odor – it will freshen it immediately, but is an aerosol so its best if you back off from this one until it settles.

What type of steam cleaner do
What type of steam cleaner do you use and what type of flooring do you have in your clinic? Thanks! 🙂

Hmm – will check on Monday, I
Hmm – will check on Monday, I think it is a Bissel upright but not sure – one setting for vacuuming, then you add distilled water and a mop-type head and set it for steaming. And the flooring is vinyl. Very durable, easy to clean, no gouges even after a year, and doesn’t feel slippery as ice when wet.

The steam cleaner is a Shark
The steam cleaner is a Shark 2-in1 “vac then steam”. An easy to maneuver upright.
