Transitional cell carcinoma diagnosed via surgical biopsy of bladder apex in a 14 year old MN Poodle

Case Study

Transitional cell carcinoma diagnosed via surgical biopsy of bladder apex in a 14 year old MN Poodle

A 14-year-old neutered male Poodle dog was presented for evaluation of chronic hematuria with a history of calcium oxalate calculi and evidence of urinary tract infection.

A 14-year-old neutered male Poodle dog was presented for evaluation of chronic hematuria with a history of calcium oxalate calculi and evidence of urinary tract infection.

Image Interpretation

The urinary bladder presented an apical polyp with focal areas of remodeling. This area appeared moderately vascular and appeared resectable. Underlying urachal remnant may be an issue in this patient given the position of the polypoid changes. Concurrent 1.0 cm calculus with 2-4 other smaller calculi that measured 0.1-0.2 cm were also noted. The urine appeared echogenic with suspended debris, which is consistent with inflammatory debris.

DX

Transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder apex

Outcome

Cystotomy was performed and cranial third of the urinary bladder was removed with biopsies.

Comments

Removal of the cranial third of the bladder, calculi removal, and urethral flushing would be recommended in this patient. Appropriate histopathology and culture of the apical bladder tissue would be recommended.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Bladder pathology (uroliths, polyploid cystitis, neoplasia, chronic bacterial cystitis), prostatic disease (neoplasia), renal pathology (pyelonephritis, renoliths, neoplasia).

Sampling

Surgical excisional biopsy of the bladder revealed transitional cell carcinoma.
