Renal adenocarcinoma in a 14 year old MN terrier mix

A 14 year old male neutered terrier mix dog was presented with anemia and leukocytosis. Physical examination was within normal limits. On urinalysis, 1+ hematuria and microalbuminuria was present. Abnormalities on CBC and blood chemistry were anemia, neutrophilia, monocytosis, thrombocytopenia, and elevated ALP activity. ACTH stimulation test was within normal limits. An abdominal mass was noted on survey radiographs.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Cystic left kidney mass, suspect carcinoma.

Image Interpretation

A cystic left kidney mass was noted. The mass contained a significant amount of adhesions and slight amount of free fluid. The patient demonstrated pain upon imaging. The mass appeared relatively well-contained, however evidence of minor rupture was noted.

DX

Low grade renal adenocarcinoma

Outcome

The renal mass was completely excised with no further treatment recommended at that time.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Renal disease – neoplasia, pyelonephritis, hydronephrosis, urolithiasis. Liver disease – infection, neoplasia, vacuolar degeneration. CBC changes – inflammation, infection, neoplasia.

Sampling

Renal biopsy was diagnostic for low grade renal adenocarcinoma.
