Case Study

RAD – osteophyte formation right acetabular groove in a 4 year old MN Boxer dog with painful hips

This 4 year old MN Boxer dog presented with pain/yelping when getting up from a laying position

Physical exam:painful on manipulation of the hips

This 4 year old MN Boxer dog presented with pain/yelping when getting up from a laying position

DX

• Emerging osteophyte right acetabular groove • No evidence of hip dysplasia • No radiographic evidence of lumbosacral stenosis

Image Interpretation

Lateral and VD pelvis – There is no evidence of hip dysplasia, both coxofemoral joint spaces are congruent, the degree of coverage of both femoral heads is adequate. The right and left thigh musculature is symmetric in volume. Mild laterally widened subchondral bone sclerosis of the acetabular grooves is noted as well as a small osteophyte at the craniolateral aspect of the right acetabulum.

Outcome

The radiographic findings are very mild and do not explain the clinical signs. Compressive, degenerative or other myelopathies/neuropathies cannot be ruled out based on the radiographic examination.
Full blood work to rule out systemic disease/weakness and full neurologic evaluation with further diagnostic imaging (ideally MRI) should be considered according to the neuroanatomic localization.
