Case Study

Multiple hepatic masses, carcinomatosis with ascites and omental seeds in a 10 year old MN Jack Russell dog

A 10 year old MN Jack Russell dog was presented for evaluation of lethargy, ascites, and hypoalbuminemia (1.7). Serosanguinous fluid was obtained from the abdomen.

A 10 year old MN Jack Russell dog was presented for evaluation of lethargy, ascites, and hypoalbuminemia (1.7). Serosanguinous fluid was obtained from the abdomen.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Multiple hepatic masses with omental seeds and ascites. Ascites is likely owing to lymphatic obstruction or possible portal hypertension. Poor prognosis.

Image Interpretation

The abdomen in this patient presented multiple cranial abdominal nodular changes with free fluid and hypoechoic omental seeds deriving from two large hepatic, mixed echogenic masses with irregular contour in the left medial lobe and caudate process. The gallbladder and deep right and left liver were unremarkable. The masses do not appear overtly resectable given the seeding pattern noted.
