Lymphoplasmacytic gastroenteritis in a 7 month old mixed breed dog

This 7-month-old mixed-breed dog was presented for vomiting and anorexia. CBC and blood chemistry profiles revealed mild azotemia with repeatable ALP, mildly elevated ALT, and elevated postprandial bile acids.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

The sonographic findings were suggestive of moderate to marked inflammatory disease such as gastroenteritis, inflammatory bowel disease, or dietary indiscretion. A proliferative gastric component, either primary or secondary to inflammatory disease, was also considered possible.

Image Interpretation

The image of the stomach showed gastric wall thickening with echogenic mural remodeling. Moderate to marked gastric wall thickening was present and most severe within the distal greater curvature. A majority of the gastric wall thickening involved the mucosal and submucosal layers, resulting in a markedly irregular mucosal surface. The muscularis and serosal layers are within normal limits.

DX

Lymphoplasmacytic gastroenteritis

Outcome

The patient responded well to broad-spectrum antibiotics and novel protein diet with hepatic nutraceuticals. The patient was currently asymptomatic 6 months post diagnosis, with normal blood parameters.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Foreign body, gastroenteritis, IBD, pancreatitis, motility disorder, neoplasia.

Sampling

Surgical full thickness intestinal samples were obtained, and histopathology revealed mild to moderate lymphoplasmacytic gastroenteritis. Concurrent mild microvascular dysplasia was present on hepatic histopathological analysis.
