Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Marked segmental bowel wall thickening consistent with neoplasia, most likely round cell in origin. Marked inflammatory or granulomatous disease such as FIP is considered less likely.

Image Interpretation

A longitudinal image of small bowel demonstrates severe, nearly symmetrical bowel wall thickening with complete loss of discrete layering. Note the transition from abnormal to normal bowel where normal layering in wall thickness is evident. The echogenic linear focus traversing the effected bowel wall on the second image represents the needle used for aspiration.

DX

Lymphoblastic lymphoma

Outcome

The patient was euthanized due clinical decline and the owner’s lack of desire to pursue chemotherapy.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

GI pathology – IBD, gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, neoplasia; hyperthyroidism, trichobezoar, FIP

Sampling

20 and 22 g US-guided FNA revealed lymphoblastic lymphoma.
