Case Study

Intestinal Stromal Tumor in a 5 year old FS Labrador Retriever mix dog

This 5-year-old FS Labrador cross breed dog presented for a routine office visit for vaccinations and was clinically normal. The physical exam revealed a large palpable mid caudal abdominal mass. CBC and blood chemistry analysis revealed only a moderately elevated ALT.

This 5-year-old FS Labrador cross breed dog presented for a routine office visit for vaccinations and was clinically normal. The physical exam revealed a large palpable mid caudal abdominal mass. CBC and blood chemistry analysis revealed only a moderately elevated ALT.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Poorly encapsulated peritoneal mass likely arising from the GI tract. There are suspected peripheral adhesions and possible omental and mesenteric involvement. Neoplasia; less likely severe inflammatory or granulomatous disease.

Image Interpretation

A large, hypoechoic, predominantly homogeneous mass with indistinct borders is present in the near field of the image. The curvilinear echogenicity located within the middle of the mass on the left side of the screen is intestinal luminal gas suggesting a mass is arising from the gastrointestinal tract. In the far field, the peripheral borders of the mass are irregular with ill defined finger-like projections extending into the adjacent omentum and mesentery. The adjacent omentum and mesentery are echogenic and may be adhered to the mass.

DX

Intestinal stromal tumor

Outcome

The patient was asymptomatic and doing well 1 year post diagnosis. Surgical removal of the mass was the only therapy employed.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

multiple organ origin -Neoplasia, benign hepatopathy, lymphadenopathy, abdominal lipoma/other benign space occupying lesion, granulomatous disease.

Sampling

Surgical intestinal resection was performed with a histopathological diagnosis of intestinal stromal tumor or leiomyoma
