Intestinal stromal tumor in a 11 year old MN Brittany Spaniel dog

An 11-year-old MN Brittany Spaniel dog was presented for anorexia, lethargy, weight loss, and anemia. Urinalysis was within normal limits. On CBC regenerative anemia, leukocytosis, neutrophilia, and monocytosis were present. Abnormalities on serum chemistry were hypoalbuminemia, low albumin/globulin ratio (0.7), hypocalcemia, and hypomagnesemia.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Neoplasia: mast cell, lymphoma, adenocarcinoma, leiomyoma, leiomyosarcoma, other. Inflammation: Secondary to chronic FB or other irritation or prior trauma.

Image Interpretation

Jejunal 6 x 5.7 cm mural mass with proximal fluid obstructive pattern. Hyperechoic areas adjacent suggest adhesions. Image 2: Doppler demonstrates high vascularity.

DX

Intestinal stromal tumor

Outcome

Thoracic radiographs were within normal limits. On exploratory laparotomy a intestinal mass and mesenteric lymphadenomegaly was evident. The mass was excised and the lymph nodes biopsied. On histopathology a gastrointestinal stromal tumor with mesenteric lymph node follicular lymphocytic hyperplasia and a histiocytic drainage reaction was diagnosed. Post surgery, the patient made an uneventful recovery and on follow up reports, continues to do well.
