Intestinal Adenocarcinoma in a 10 year old FS Doberman Pinscher dog

Case Study

Intestinal Adenocarcinoma in a 10 year old FS Doberman Pinscher dog

This 10-year-old FS Doberman Pinscher presented for anorexia and weight loss. The physical exam was unremarkable other than mild dehydration and mild cachexia. CBC and blood chemistry analysis demonstrated mild regenerative anemia, moderate leukocytosis with a left shift, mild hypoalbuminemia and hypomagnesemia. The radiographs demonstrate mild ascites with poor organ detail.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Obstructing annular duodenal wall mass with resultant gastric mechanical ileus consistent with neoplasia, most notably adenocarcinoma. Granulomatous disease is considered less likely.

Image Interpretation

The long axis image reveals marked, circumferential, symmetrical duodenal wall thickening with significant loss of mural detail (arrow) (Image and video 1.) The stomach is moderately distended with echogenic fluid (large arrow.) Two ovoid upper gastrointestinal lymph nodes are also enlarged (small arrows) (Video 2.)

DX

Intestinal adenocarcinoma

Outcome

The patient was euthanized due to poor prognosis.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

GI pathology – Neoplasia, peritonitis, granulomatous disease, intestinal obstruction/perforation.

Sampling

A 16ga US-guided biopsy of the intestinal mass revealed adenocarcinoma (Video 3.)
