This 11 year old MN Whippet mix dog presented with acute vomiting. Eating/drinking then vomiting. Stool has decreased in size, mucoid. History of atypical Addison’s for 3 years, treated with prednisone 1.25 mg sid.

Image Interpretation

The left adrenal gland was slightly subnormal in size and measured 0.4 cm in width x 1.84 cm.  A linear foreign body was noted in the jejunum with intestinal plication/accordion pleating. There was evidence of peritonitis noted at this point with regional and fatty inflammation. A thicker, shadowing cloth type foreign matter was noted in the mid jejunum as well, which attached to the linear foreign body. The linear foreign body is likely anchored in the pylorus continuing into the small intestine and jejunum. The stomach was severely dilated with fluid.  Free fluid was noted in the caudal abdomen.

DX

Gastrointestinal linear/cloth foreign body with regional peritonitis

Outcome

Immediate exploratory surgery with gastrointestinal biopsies would be warranted.
Underlying gastrointestinal inflammatory disease is likely of chronic nature. Cortisone
supplementation is likely warranted given the Addisonian history in this patient and is
recommended prior to surgery.

Comments

Surgical exploration did reveal a linear foreign body, but the more details of the surgical report are unavailable. The patient is deceased.
