Gastric Ribbon Foreign Body in a 6-month-old MN DSH cat

A 6-month-old MN DSH cat was presented for lethargy with the owner reporting that 25 feet of curling ribbon was missing and that the empty spool was found on the floor. The only abnormality on survey radiographs was a large amount of stool in the colon. Abnormalities on CBC were leukocytosis, neutrophilia, basophilia, eosinophilia, and thrombocytopenia. Serum biochemistry was within normal limits.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Gastric foreign body

Image Interpretation

A 4.0 cm gastric foreign body was noted. This did not appear to enter into the small intestine and is most consistent with accumulation of foreign material such as fabric or ribbon material.

DX

Gastric foreign body

Outcome

A gastrotomy was performed and a large amount of ribbon was found in the stomach. The pet recovered from surgery well.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

GI pathology – foreign body; CBC abnormalities – intestinal parasites, systemic mastocytosis, dietary, hypersensitivity
