Gastric neoplasia in a 11 year old MN Shepherd mixed dog

An 11-year-old MN Shepherd mix was presented for weight loss, inappetance, and vomiting. Recent blood work was within normal limits and the only abnormality on urinalysis was crystaluria – few triple phosphate and rare amorphous phosphate. Radiographs were not taken.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

gastric neoplasia – carcinoma, lymphoma vs other. Possible severe granulomatous disease.

Image Interpretation

The stomach presented moderate to severe thickening with loss of mural detail and polypoid mucosal changes as well as two large lymph nodes caudal to the stomach and in the epigastric region. Adhesions were noted from the omentum suggestive for transmural pathology.

DX

Gastric neoplasia

Outcome

The dog was treated with prednisone and Pepcid. The patient’s appetite did not improve and he continued to vomit. The owner subsequently elected euthanasia.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

GI pathology – IBD, neoplasia, foreign body, partial gastric torsion, gastric ulcer. Pancreatic pathology – chronic pancreatitis, neoplasia. Renal pathology- pyelonephritis, neoplasia.
