Gastric foreign body in a 10 year old MN Rottweiler dog

The patient is a canine Rottweiler, NM, 10 years, 105.8 lbs. who was presented for weight loss, occasional v/d, history of eating rugs/carpets and dog beds on multiple occasions, however this is a new behavior change. No vomiting currently. Urine specific gravity 1.025, pH 6.5.

 

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

IBD , gastric foreign body

Image Interpretation

The stomach was repleted with moderately shadowing foreign matter. The gastric foreign body appeared to enter into the upper small intestine. There was no evidence of peritonitis noted. A minor amount of overlying reactive fat was noted. Minor mucosal speckling was noted in the small intestine. No loss of detail was noted. The colon was repleted with a minor amount of stool.

Comments

Recommend immediate exploratory surgery with expectations towards gastroduodenotomy and gastrointestinal biopsies in order to rule out underlying disease that may be predisposing to the pica behavior.
