Gastric carcinoma diagnosed on U/S guided FNA, in an 11 year old FS Siberian Husky

Case Study

Gastric carcinoma diagnosed on U/S guided FNA, in an 11 year old FS Siberian Husky

An 11-year-old spayed female Siberian Husky dog was presented for a history of anorexia for 1 week duration. Blood chemistry revealed hypoalbuminemia, elevated ALP, and a high GGTP. CBC was within normal limits. Total T4 was low.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

These images show gastric mural thickening with detail loss and focal peritonitis. Gastric carcinoma, complicated inflammatory disease with perforation, lymphoma/round cell neoplasia are all differentials.

Image Interpretation

The near field gastric wall is mildly thickened with loss of mural detail and echogenic reactive fat suggestive for a transmural pathology and focal peritonitis.

DX

Gastric carcinoma

Outcome

The patient did not respond to supportive therapy and was euthanized.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Biliary disease. End stage hepatic disease. Protein losing nephropathy, protein losing enteropathy. Neoplasia. Hypothyroidism versus euthyroid sick syndrome.

Sampling

US-guided fine needle aspirate was conducted. Cytologic results from samples taken from the wall of the stomach were highly suggestive of gastric carcinoma. Aspirates from liver were inconclusive.
