A 7-year-old MN Boxer was presented for vomiting. The patient was treated with anti-emetics, antacids, and was rehydrated. However, there was no response and he continued to vomit.

DX

Gastric and intestinal foreign body.

Outcome

Pre-surgical lab showed an elevated HCT and slight hyperglycemia. On exploratory laparotomy a canvas foreign body was identified in the stomach and another one in the mid jejunum, both of which were removed. The pet was discharged with a course of Zeniquin, Rimadyl, and Pepcid. Although post surgery there were a few episodes of vomiting, overall the pet has done well.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

vomiting – foreign body obstruction, torsion, neoplasia, ulceration, intestinal perforation, IBD. Pancreatic neoplasia, pancreatitis, liver disease, Addison’s disease. Renal pathology- renal failure, pyelonephritis. CNS disease

Sampling

Full thickness surgical biopsies of the stomach and jejunum were within normal limits.
