Degenerative mitral and tricuspid valve disease in a 7 year old MN Cocker Spaniel

Case Study

Degenerative mitral and tricuspid valve disease in a 7 year old MN Cocker Spaniel

A 7-year-old male neutered Cocker Spaniel dog was presented for evaluation of a heart murmur. Coughing was not present. Survey radiographs were normal.

A 7-year-old male neutered Cocker Spaniel dog was presented for evaluation of a heart murmur. Coughing was not present. Survey radiographs were normal.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

This dog shows clear evidence of degenerative valve disease of the mitral and tricuspid valves.

Image Interpretation

There is the beginning of left ventricular eccentric hypertrophy (volume overload). There is a mildly enlarged left atrium, and the left ventricle shows mild volume overload. The mitral valve is moderately degenerated with both leaflets slightly prolapsing into the left atrium. The septal leaflet of the tricuspid valve is mildly degenerated as well. There is moderate mitral insufficiency present (pressure gradient 114 mm Hg).

Outcome

No medication is currently indicated. The patient should be rechecked after 3 months or if any symptoms occur. Congestive heart failure will probably occur in the future.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Mitral/tricuspid endocardiosis, vegetative endocarditis, early cardiomyopathy (dilated/hypertrophic), atrial neoplasia/embolism.

Sampling

None
