This 6 year old MN Bullmastiff dog presented with a history of weight loss and coughing. Thoracic radiographs indicate thoracic mass.
Suspect round cell neoplasia such as histiocytic sarcoma, lung necrosis or lymph node
origin. There was minor potential for thymoma.
The heart was structurally normal with no evidence of pathology. However, the heart was surrounded by pericardial fat. This is consistent with pericardial diaphragmatic hernia. A concurrent 12 x 18 cm, mixed, hypoechoic mass was noted in the left medial to left cranial lung was noted.
An abdominal sonogram is recommended.
FNA and tele cytology performed. Cytology results: The cellularity is extremely uniform supporting the likelihood of a round cell neoplastic process. The cells are most characteristic of histiocytic cells with the nuclei and cytoplasm strongly supportive of that type of process. Blastic cells of any other type cannot be identified. The changes do not support lymphoma or carcinoma. It is not characteristic of a spindle cell sarcoma. Round cell sarcoma or histiocytic sarcoma appears to be most likely. Inflammation is not suggested with the uniformity the of these cells. Consistent with histiocytic sarcoma
