CT – Mild unspecific non-destructive rhinitis and sinusitis in a 6 year old MN Maine Coon cat with a history of sneezing

Case Study

CT – Mild unspecific non-destructive rhinitis and sinusitis in a 6 year old MN Maine Coon cat with a history of sneezing

This 6 year old MN Maine Coon cat has a history of sneezing of one year duration; has been on multiple antibitoics, steroids and nebulizer treatments with little to no response. Presented for congested breathing

This 6 year old MN Maine Coon cat has a history of sneezing of one year duration; has been on multiple antibitoics, steroids and nebulizer treatments with little to no response. Presented for congested breathing

DX

The computed tomographic findings are compatible with mild bilateral unspecific nondestructive rhinitis and sinusitis.

Image Interpretation

CT of the head –

The computed tomography of the head reveals mild generalized and bilateral thickening of the mucosal lining of the nasal turbinates within the mid third of the nasal cavities. There is no turbinate or bone destruction, no gravity dependent accumulation of nasal secretions is noted. There is no evidence of nasopharyngeal stenosis or aberrant nasal conchal growth. Scant fluid attenuating secretions are noted within both frontal sinuses.

Outcome

Potential underlying causes include bacterial rhinitis and viral rhinitis with bacterial
superinfection. Typical findings of fungal rhinitis are lacking here. Theoretically
emerging fungal rhinitis/recent fungal superinfection cannot be ruled out entirely.
Recent antimicrobial treatment may reduce the degree of mucosal thickening and
amount of nasal/sinus secretions.
Rhinoscopy with sampling to obtain bacterial and fungal cultures & histopathology is
advised for further definition and to adjust the therapeutic management appropriately.
