CT – Cranioventral mediastinal soft tissue neoplasia in a 9 year old FS DSH cat

Case Study

CT – Cranioventral mediastinal soft tissue neoplasia in a 9 year old FS DSH cat

This 9 year old FS DSH cat has a mediastinal mass.

This 9 year old FS DSH cat has a mediastinal mass.

DX

Cranioventral mediastinal soft tissue neoplasia without evidence of metastatic spread.

Image Interpretation

CT of the thorax and abdomen:

An irregular shaped lobulated cranioventral mediastinal soft tissue mass of approximately 4 x 2.5 x 2 cm is seen separate retrosternally from the heart.  The bronchial tree presents slightly irregular margination. Mildly increased attenuation and thickness of the bronchial walls is noted as well as mild multifocal cylindrical bronchiectasis. Moreover, marked multifocal mineralization of the bronchial mucinous glands is seen along with some multifocal interstitial and subpleural scarring. There is no evidence of metastatic spread to the lungs.

Outcome

Cranioventral mediastinal soft tissue neoplasia. Differentials include ectopic
thyroid carcinoma, cranioventral mediastinal lymphoma, and thymoma
• No evidence of metastatic spread to the lungs or tracheobronchial lymph nodes
• Evidence of feline chronic lower airway disease with bronchiectasia and
benign bronchiolithiasis – clinical correlation warranted. Considered incidental
at this point. Screening for hyperthyroidism is advised. The situation for surgical
removal appears to be beneficial as far as assessable at the point of review.
