This 5-year-old DSH was presented for weight loss and intermittent vomiting. Physical exam was normal. Blood analysis was normal in 2 separate samples.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Partially or intermittently obstructing, minimally dense foreign gastric material (i.e. hairball, cloth). Delayed gastric emptying secondary to suspected constipation, ileus secondary to non-visualized inflammatory disease, pain or discomfort could also be considered

Image Interpretation

Image 1: The gastric body and pylorus are moderately filled with echogenic material with distal acoustic shadowing. Normal gastric wall layering and thickness is present. Video 1: The imaged segment of bowel and is moderately filled with similar appearing material visualized within the stomach, 24 hours prior.

DX

Colonic foreign body

Outcome

The patient recovered uneventfully.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

GI pathology – IBD, pancreatitis, gastrointestinal neoplasia, chronic hairball, foreign body.

Sampling

Endoscopy was performed. Foreign matter encountered that was unable to be removed endoscopically. Surgical exploratory allowed for removal of stuffing material from the colon and various ingesta and foreign matter and undigested food from the stomach. Endoscopic biopsies revealed mild duodenal lymphoplasmacytic inflammation. Gastric samples were normal.
