Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Aortic and iliac thrombus. Suspect sepsis or infectious disease. Full coagulation panel, Plavix therapy, Doxycycline and Clindamycin combination would be recommended. Prognosis is extremely guarded. Recheck sonogram in 5-7 days.

Image Interpretation

The aorta and left iliac artery were almost completely obstructed by a 6 x 2 cm echogenic thrombus that appeared to be entering into the right iliac artery. The cause of the thrombus could not be ascertained.

DX

Aortic and iliac thrombosis

Outcome

The patient was humanely euthanized. The underlying overt cause of the aortic and iliac thrombus was never discovered. Infectious disease, sepsis, occult neoplasia or other causes of Virchow’s triad are all possible. No evidence of cardiac disease was noted in the workup.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Orthopedic, neurological, muscular, metabolic, thromboembolic.

Sampling
