Addison’s disease in a 8 year old MN Bichon

An 8-year-old NM Bichon was presented for evaluation of acute vomiting and decreased appetite. Abnormalities on serum biochemistry were hyponatremia and hyperkalemia. ACTH stimulation showed subnormal pre-and post-cortisol. ACTH assay was very low.

 

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Flattened isoechoic adrenal glands.
Treatment for Addison’s disease is recommended.

Image Interpretation

The left adrenal gland was uniform and measured 1.0 x 0.18 cm. The right adrenal gland was difficult to visualize, but was flattened and isoechoic measuring 1.1 x 0.2 cm.
