A 1-year-old male Beagle cross was presented for evaluation of difficulty breathing.

 

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Diaphragmatic hernia with small intestinal herniation. There was no evidence of obstruction or strangulation of the small intestinal bowel loops.

Image Interpretation

A small intestinal bowel loop is seen immediately adjacent to the heart. The small intestinal loops are not dilated. They appear to be empty. There was no evidence of pleural free fluid at this time.

Lung – pneumonia, edema, hemorrhage, torsion
Pleural space – fluid, air, neoplasia, diaphragmatic hernia
