An 8-year-old MN Golden retriever dog was presented for evaluation of a mass that had been palpated on rectal examination. Blood work was within normal limits.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Pelvic mass, likely lymph node or blood vessel derived sarcoma. Possible prostatic carcinoma, yet the position would suggest pelvic sarcoma. Stool obstruction.

Image Interpretation

Stool obstruction appeared to be present. The rectum in this patient was deviated at the at the level of the urethra owing to a 6 x 7 cm, mixed, hypoechoic mass. This appeared to be contiguous with the prostate or impinging upon the residual prostate. The mass was micronodular with a minor, pericapsular inflammatory pattern.

Outcome

The owner is not interested in treating at this time.

Comments

A stool softener would be recommended.  Chemotherapeutic protocol should be based on the cytology findings. Thoracic radiographs revealed thoracic nodules.  Exact organ or structure of origin is not known at this time.  Guarded prognosis.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Prostatic pathology – neoplasia, abscess, cyst; Colon/rectum pathology – neoplasia, polyp; Urethra pathology – neoplasia, granuloma; Intra-pelvic pathology – neoplasia, abscess, granuloma, lymph node

Sampling

FNAs of mass were performed
