Case Study

04_00506 Rocky F Jejunal foreign body with obstruction

A 5-year-old NM German shepherd was presented for evaluation of acute vomiting, lethargy, and anorexia. Radiographs were suspicious for mechanical ileus.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Shadowing obstructive material was noted. This is consistent with stuffing or fabric type material with thickened surrounding bowel. Areas of reactive mesentery were noted as well.
Biopsies or resection of this bowel may be necessary at the time of surgery. Underlying histopathology is essential in this case to rule out chronic disease.

Image Interpretation

The upper gastrointestinal tract was dilated with fluid from the stomach through the small intestine. Lack of peristalsis was noted. An obstructive pattern was noted with a large amount of anechoic fluid and chyme. Shadowing obstructive material was noted. Dilated small intestine along with empty small intestine was present. There was some loss of detail. Areas of reactive mesentery were noted around the region of obstruction.
