An 11-year-old NM Border Collie was presented for evaluation of  diarrhea of approximately 4 weeks duration that had developed shortly after defecating a paper towel.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Minor colonic wall thickening. Portions of the rectum appear to meet neoplastic criteria. However, granulomatous colitis is significantly possible. The thickened portion of the rectum does not appear to be resectable. Chronic granulomatous colitis, parasitic disease or colonic neoplasia such as mast cell disease and carcinoma are all possible.
FNA of the rectal wall could be performed for further definition if the sonographer is comfortable in the procedure and feels confident that they can stay out of the lumen. Otherwise, colonoscopy is recommended.

Image Interpretation

The rectum was thickened with some loss of detail and measured 0.92 cm at the level of the pelvic urethra. The remainder of the intestinal tract was unremarkable.

DX

Rectal wall thickening with loss of layering.
