A 7-year-old male Pit bull terrier was presented for evaluation of anorexia and weight loss. The only abnormality on physical examination was ascites. CBC and serum biochemistry were within reference range.

A 7-year-old male Pit bull terrier was presented for evaluation of anorexia and weight loss. The only abnormality on physical examination was ascites. CBC and serum biochemistry were within reference range.

Image Interpretation

Liver presented mild heterogeneous changes. The gallbladder was unremarkable. The abdomen presented moderate amount of free fluid. Mesentery was bunched in the cranial abdomen.

Ascites – modified transudate (neoplasia, heart disease, portal hypertension), exudate (bile, urine, neoplasia)
Pericardial effusion

Sampling

Cytology from abdominocentesis and cytospin slide prep revealed carcinomatosis.
