Case Study

03_00513 Molly Z Suspect vacuolar hepatopathy, emerging mucocele

An 8-year-old SF Pomeranian Mix with a history of chronic cough, PU/PD, normal ACTH stimulation test, and suspected mucocele on a previous ultrasound was presented for evaluation. Abnormalities on serum biochemistry were elevated ALT (147), ALP (404), and GGT (17) activity.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Vacuolar hepatopathy liver pattern with emerging gallbladder mucocele.

Image Interpretation

Exam of the cranial abdomen demonstrated excessive liver size, swollen contour, with coarse architecture. Parenchymal echogenicity was diffusely isoechoic to the spleen and falciform fat. The gallbladder revealed minor over distension and minor striating bile. The rounding of the gallbladder along with the striating bile and thickening of the neck of the gallbladder is most consistent with emerging gallbladder mucocele. However, full mucocele is not present.
