Case Study

FIP in a 1 year old MN DSH cat

A 1-year-old neutered male DSH cat with a history of intermittent lameness and pyrexia was presented for evaluation of an abdominal mass and anemia.

A 1-year-old neutered male DSH cat with a history of intermittent lameness and pyrexia was presented for evaluation of an abdominal mass and anemia.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Aggressive, mesenteric lymphadenopathy with coarse liver.
Enlarged irregular spleen.
Strongly suggestive for an infiltrative pattern in the spleen, liver and mesenteric lymph nodes. Primary differentials are lymphoma or FIP. Reactive lymphadenitis and splenitis are possible. Medullary rim in kidney would suggest FIP as well. FNA were performed on the mesenteric lymph nodes without complications.

Image Interpretation

The midabdomen revealed a mesenteric root mass that measured 2.5 cm. Surrounding free fluid was noted as well as reactive fat. The mass was hypoechoic and irregular.
The spleen was mildly irregular in contour and slightly swollen. Micronodular, honeycomb type pattern was noted. The spleen was surrounded by free fluid.
The liver was coarse in architecture with increased portal markings. A slight amount of free fluid was noted.
