Benign splenic nodule, potential abscessation or emerging neoplasia. Fine-needle aspirate or splenectomy is highly encouraged. Even though no overt evidence of metastatic disease was noted, liver biopsies would be warranted as well to ensure that multi-centric neoplastic process is not emerging.
The spleen presented a solitary, mixed, hypoechoic nodule that measured 1.8 cm. The nodule appeared to expand upon the capsule, which is suggestive for a relatively aggressive process. These images are consistent with abscessation or emerging neoplasia.
Given that minor capsular expansion is present and loss of parenchymal detail is present in a predisposed breed, a recheck ultrasound in 1 week is essential to ensure no growth. Given the sonographic appearance, splenectomy would not be a wrong choice regardless of the cytology results.
Inappropriate urination – bladder disease (neoplasia, uroliths, bacterial cystitis), urethral disease (urethral sphincter incompetence, hormonal/bacterial infection), renal disease (chronic kidney disease).
FNA of the spleen revealed benign hyperplasia.
