Jejunal foreign body in a 6-year-old MN poodle dog

A 6-year-old MN poodle dog with a history of vomiting for 48hrs was presented for evaluation. There was no history of foreign body or diet changes. Laboratory testing was within normal limits. Therapy with Cerenia, Baytril, famotidine, and IV fluids had resulted in cessation of the vomiting but there was ongoing anorexia and recent development of pyrexia.

Image Interpretation

The gastrointestinal tract presented a large, linear foreign body that measured 4-5 cm with gastric stasis. Upper intestinal stasis was also noted with some obstructive 2.0 cm progressively shadowing structure in the distal small intestine.

DX

Jejunal foreign body

Outcome

At surgery, two foreign bodies were removed (rubber bands). The patient went home and is doing well.

Comments

Exploratory surgery would be warranted. Broad spectrum antibiotics and aggressive plasma expanders would be warranted prior to surgery.
