Case Study

Lymphoma in a 4 year old MN DSH cat

A 4-year-old MN DSH cat was presented for anorexia, and vomiting. On physical examination an abdominal mass was palpable. On survey radiographs a radiopaque structure in the cranial abdomen was evident. Abnormalities on CBC and serum chemistry were neutrophilia, lymphopenia, and hypercalcemia.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Abdominal neoplasia involving a large small intestinal mass with pancreatic, omental and possibly hepatic involvement.

Image Interpretation

The abdomen in this patient presented an 8.6 cm intestinal mass with associated lymphadenopathy. The parenchymal changes in the pancreas were mostly heterogeneous. There were also heterogeneous hepatic changes. Ill-defined omental reactivity and nodular omental changes were noted with extension of the neoplastic process. A minor amount of free fluid was noted. This mass is not resectable.

DX

Lymphoma-abdominal mass. Hepatic Lipidosis

Outcome

The owners elected euthanasia.

Comments

The hope is that chemotherapeutic intervention will allow for reduction in size.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

Mass – neoplasia, granuloma of liver/kidney/pancreas/GI tract/lymph node. Non-organ associated neoplasia/granuloma.

Sampling

Fine needle aspirate. Fine needle aspirate cytology of the liver showed moderate lipid vacuolar hepatopathy, whereas those from the abdominal mass was consistent with lymphoma.
