This 3-year-old MN Chocolate Labrador retriever was presented for severe vomiting, anorexia and diarrhea. The clinical exam revealed abdominal pain and moderate dehydration. Initial CBC and blood chemistry analysis were normal. The patient had been hospitalized 5 days with intravenous therapy prior to the sonogram.

DX

Pancreas: Necrosuppurative inflammation, high cellularity. Negative aerobic and anaerobic cultures.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Moderate pancreatitis with peripancreatic inflammation.

Image Interpretation

Severe, uniform pancreatic enlargement with a diffusely, moderately hypoechoic parenchyma is present. The bordering fat is mildly to moderately echogenic.

Outcome

The patient responded well to an additional 3 days of hospitalization and pain management and was discharged without further symptoms.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

G.I. clinical signs- gastroenteritis, pancreatitis foreign body or other obstruction, atypical Addison’s disease, peritonitis, IBD, neoplasia.

Sampling

22-gauge US guided FNA revealed necrosuppurative inflammation with high cellularity. Aerobic and anaerobic cultures were negative (antibiotics had been used in the protocol).
