Gastric foreign body in a 7 year old MN Dachsund

This 7-year-old MN Dachshund dog was presented for excessive salivation and anorexia of sudden onset with progressive dysuria. The physical exam was normal. CBC and blood chemistry analyses were normal. Urinalysis revealed concentrated urine with a 4-10 WBC/HPF.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Gastric luminal foreign body or other luminal content.

Image Interpretation

A strongly shadowing, fairly well marginated, irregularly shaped gastric luminal foreign body is present. The stomach is predominantly empty and contracted around the described foreign body.

DX

Gastric foreign body

Outcome

The patient recovered uneventfully from surgery and was successfully treated for UTI with full resolution of signs.

Comments

Right intercostal approach is optimal for imaging the pylorus especially in deep chested dogs.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

GI signs – gastritis, GI foreign body, obstruction, pancreatitis, IBD, neoplasia. Dysuria – UTI, urolithiasis, urinary tract, other neoplasia.

Sampling

Upper GI endoscopy was performed that visualized a corn cob foreign body lodged in the pylorus. Therefore, open gastrotomy was performed in order to dislodge and remove the corn cob.
