This 2-year-old FS Labradoodle presented for postprandial vomiting with a normal appetite. Physical examination and blood analysis were normal.

Sonographic Differential Diagnosis

Gastric foreign body (likely a ball) with resultant mechanical ileus.

Image Interpretation

The longitudinal image of the stomach demonstrates a round, 3 cm luminal foreign body with discrete, smooth and continuous contour positioned within the pylorus. Intense distal acoustic shadowing begins within the distal two thirds of the foreign body supporting a moderately dense structure. The fundus of the stomach is moderately distended with echogenic fluid and ingesta. The presence of rugal folds supports the gastric location.

DX

Gastric foreign body, mechanical ileus

Outcome

Recovery was uneventful.

Clinical Differential Diagnosis

GI pathology -Gastritis, physical or functional pyloric outflow delay/foreign body IBD, intussusception, neoplasia; pancreatic pathology – pancreatitis; Addison’s disease,

Sampling

Exploratory gastrotomy revealed a rubber ball lodged within the pylorus.
