Intestinal mast cell tumor in a 14 year old MN DSH cat
Sonographic Differential Diagnosis
Suspect malignant transformation of inflammatory bowel disease to lymphoma. Marked intestinal inflammatory disease with focal, emerging neoplasia, such as lymphoma or mast cell disease, cannot be ruled out.
Image Interpretation
The imaged small bowel is moderately to markedly thick walled and abnormally layered; there is an especially prominent muscularis layer. Sharp delineation between wall layering is maintained. Focal, marked asymmetrical muscularis thickening is noted within a segment of small bowel. Subtle loss of wall layering is also present within this region. The video demonstrates the transition from simple thickened muscularis within the intestinal wall into an overt mass with loss of mural detail.

Outcome
A non-cortisone-oriented medical support protocol was administered over a 2-month period. The patient was mildly symptomatic, with occasional anorexia and diarrhea but at times thrived. The owner declined chemotherapy.
Clinical Differential Diagnosis
Neoplasia, foreign body, intussusception, and abdominal abscess, pancreatitis.
Sampling
Surgical resection and anastomosis of the mass was performed as a debulking measure. Histopathological analysis revealed intestinal mast cell tumor with associated lymph node metastasis.
