Here is a common issue for many people:

How do I image deep structures in a big dog/barrel shaped dog abdomen?

  1. Use the down arrow on the frequency switch to drop the frequency all the way down to PEN  (see image below)
  2. Then use the gain knob to adjust the gain up or down until you get an image that looks good to your eye (enough contrast, not too bright or too dark)
  3. Adjust depth as needed to have approximately 2-3 cm under your area of interest. If you are imaging the liver, make sure you can see the entire diaphragm
  4. Hold the probe in the “SDEP” way – fingers all the way up to the footprint to that the animal feels your fingers and not a hard probe. This will allow you to use more gentle but steady pressure to get closer to your target, even on a big dog. Especially important around the ribs – this technique will allow you to compress between the ribs a bit to get your best window. For the right liver, hold the probe like a beer can and take advantage of gravity that right lateral recumbancy gives you. Fish around to find your best window between the ribs and fan from end to end.
