Use of alfaxan for an echo on a fractious cat

Use of alfaxan for an echo on a fractious cat

  • I need to peform a preanesthetic echocardiogram on a fractious cat that will be undergoing radiation therapy for a sinonasal carcinoma.
  • The cat is somewhat fractious and resistant to restraint.
  • My first choice is burtorphanol or butorphanol-ace but wanted to know what your thoughts on using alfaxan?
  • How will alfaxan affect the echo results?

Hi!
Yes, Gabapentin works

Hi!

Yes, Gabapentin works great. When they come im as emergency I still use some Butorphanol but if they are scheduled, Gabapentin works great (50 mg in small cats, 100 in normal size cats 150 mg in large cats). Alfaxan has as well been recommended by some cardiologists but I do not have experience with this one.

Thank you.  I think this cat

Thank you.  I think this cat may already be on gabapentin for his behaviour issues.  His owners (the clinic owners :)) have had problems with him being aggressive.  I am not sure if this is an old problem or perhaps related to pain from his sinonasal tumor.  I will find out if he is still on gabapentin and what dose.
