Thoracic mass

Sonopath Forum

  • 10 year old MN Border Collie presented coughing and with laboured breathing
  • There is a mass around the heart base. The heart was displaced and could not be assessed from the right side when in right lateral recumbency, only when very sternal. The mass was compressing the right atrium and seemed to be encircling aorta but my suspicion it is lung origin…
  • Do you think this is a lung mass or cardiac mass?

I agree this looks lung

I agree this looks lung origin impinging on the heart. There are comet tail artifacts along the interface between the abnormal lung and normal lung with air and asymmetry of the normal pleural surface. In the first clip, there appear to be areas of air entrapment within the abnormal lung. The mass appears solid and homogenous. I would suspect neoplasia although lung consolidation and neoplasia may present in a similar manner. Sampling, if possible, would be ideal.
