Left Atrial Changes

An echocardiogram on a 13-year-old Canine, 46# (20.8 kg)
  • history of coughing and grade 2/6 systolic heart murmur previously heard. No coughing and no murmur (two doctors auscultated) were heard at the time of echo exam(s).
  • Radiographs: Reviewed by a radiologist that interpreted as left atrial enlargement and generalized cardiomegaly.
  • I have examined this dog twice and I am having trouble getting decent diagnostic images, but something doesn’t seem right with the Left Atrium and possibly aorta.

    • The LA doesn’t appear enlarged on Echo, but in light of the previously heard murmur and radiology review, I am worried about possible LA rupture.
    • There also appears to be small volume pericardial effusion, but hard to be sure as image quality is poor.
    • The patient is relatively asymptomatic otherwise, and according to the owner the coughing is better. Nothing make sense.  Could this be a persistent left CVC?

I agree th ela is not

I agree th ela is not enlarged. Not sure if that pericadial issue is angular or real. Usually with LA rupture they are tachycardic and the LA is usually somewhat enlarged. The cough is not cardiogenic though.
