Kidneys hypoechoic rim

– these are the kidneys of a 8 yr FS unwell minature poodle

– bloodwork showed moderate elevation in ALT, normal ALP and upper normal bilirubin, mild hypoalbuminemia. No azotemia CBC wnl

– uirne SG 1.030  bilirubinuria, quiet sediment

– the liver was diffusely enlarged and hyperechoic with rounded capsular margins – no evidence of biliary obstruction or GB disease other than a single, non-obstructive cholelith in the GB; liver core biopsies pending

– what I found interesting were the kidneys in this patient; hyperechoic cortices with a thin, outer capsular hypoechoic ring. I know a hypoechoic ring can be assocaited with renal lymphoma but am wondering about other differentials here?

The medulla also looks “speckly” to me but I am just getting use to this machine

With the liver lesion, I was thinking about the possibility of Leptospirosis?

Lymphoma is a rule out. Also

Lymphoma is a rule out. Also consider an acute nephritis.

Lepto can also affect the kidneys depending on the sero type.

Can the “speckules” be bilirubin?

Just a couple of thoughts.

That is odd you see this

That is odd you see this subcapsular capping pattern in cats a lot with LSA like randy says and Ive seen it somewhat similarly wiht lepto and other acute renal disease but with quiet sediment and no wt loss I doubt its an issue clinically.
