Heart screen breeding dog

Heart screen breeding dog

  • 3 year old FE Great Dane 55kg screening for DCM for breeding
  • Clinically normal, I did not auscultate a murmur
  • A mild mitral valve insufficiency was present but the echo and ECG seemed otherwise normal
  • How would you classify this in a report, should this dog be bred?

Hi!
Given the lack of morphologic changes, mitral dysplasia is possible here. Still, some mild DMVD cannot be ruled out, but this seems to be less likely.

Re breeding: I would never ever give breeding recommendations as a vet. This is a matter of breeding clubs and has to be decided by them. Our duty is to do an exam and write down you expertise. There are no studies available about the heredity of mitral dysplasia or DMVD in Great Danes.

Before breeding recommendations can be given, the cardiac health situation of all Great Danes in your region has to be reviewed on a standardised basis. Once this has been done, recommendations have to be established in cooperation with geneticist.

I would just inform the owner that this heart is not totally ok and  – if it is a mild form of DMVD – it can potentially progress. A re-check is recommended in a year.
