Ok so I’ve seen this for many years and have advocated histopath on it and some are LP infiltrates that are pred responsive but not all of them. But rarely does anyone go to sx for histopath to prove or disprove this theory. But empirical tx on this cat with a wicked insterstitial cystitis and localized free fluid and adhesions responded remarkably to gabapentin 100 mg. I’m still chasing the entire history to see if they did anything else but this is a pretty remarkable response.

Then the images today 5-27-16 after gabapentin tx… clean as a whistle and asymptomatic:)
See before and after videos too. Has anyone used gabapentin for idiopathic or interstitial cystitis or has anyone seen a write-up on it?

Gabapentin acts as an
Gabapentin acts as an analgesic but also prevents the sensation of pain (allodynia) by amongst others inhibiting substance P. Thus it should work in intersitital cystitis. Unfortunately success of therapy with interstitial cystitis is very difficult to prove because of the waxing-waning nature of the disease. What is needed is a large case base study.

Hi!! Thanks for sharing your therapeutic approaches as well as your great scanning techniques. Yesterday I had a case referred to us with similar findings. Are there any adverse reactions or considerations to gabapentin treatment? In my case the thickening appeared as well in bladder, urethra and distal ureters. Proximal ureters were not thickened although recently cat was blocked and had very likely transient hydroneprhosis ( currently mild pyelonephritis signs).
Where can I find out more about gabapentin? And protocol?

We have been using Buprenorphine orally with some sucess. Never tried Gabapentin- but I may give it a try next time I see a case.

Let me see if my friend Dr. Ken Leal can jump in here as he uses gaba a lot. I haven’t seen any side effects and has been great for crazy cat scans especially echos wiht clients sending telemed and doesnt cause any issues regarding heart function.
