A 12 year old MN mixed breed dog with a left sided large heterogenous, vascular thyroid mass, suspect carcinoma, cytology pending. There was also a small nodule on the right thyroid gland. I could not access this to aspirate it. Do you think this is a thyroid mass or parathyroid gland or something to be concerned about?

Were you going to post pictures of both the left and right thyroid? Thyroid carcinoma would be my #1 differential for this. And, contrary to the literature, I usually have good luck getting a diagnosis off of the FNA. My local university performs whole body CT scans on these guys and that helps pick up evidence of both local and distant metastases so that an appropriate treatment plan can be formed.

Agree that most likley etiology is a thryroid carcinoma and can often involve both glands. FNA often diagnostic as the glandular tissue exfoliates well. Screeinng for mets ideally by CT or else 3-view thoracic radiographs. CT also helps as some of these tumors can be extremely locally invasive.
