Heart base mass with pericardial effusion and tamponade effect in a 14 year old MN Cocker Spaniel

Case Study

Heart base mass with pericardial effusion and tamponade effect in a 14 year old MN Cocker Spaniel

This 14 year old MN Cocker Spaniel presented with bradycardia, arrhythmia, bilateral wheezing and collapse. The patient has been on pimopendin and theopnylline for the last few days.

Image Interpretation

The cardiac presentation revealed pericardial effusion with tamponade effect with a heart base mass. The mass derives from the right ventricular free wall junction with the right atrium. The mass measured approximately 4-4.5 cm. This is consistent with a muscle based mass or hemangiosarcoma, most likely.

DX

Heart base mass deriving from the right ventricular free wall junction with the right atrium. Pericardial effusion and tamponade effect.

Outcome

Masenchymal tumor is possible given the breed predisposition, chemodectoma is also
possible, yet this is not in the typical position of chemodectoma. Palliative drainage of
the pericardium is warranted to abate clinical signs.
