CT – Mild generalized periodontal disease with emerging jaw bone atrophy in a 10 year old FS Rottweiler dog

Case Study

CT – Mild generalized periodontal disease with emerging jaw bone atrophy in a 10 year old FS Rottweiler dog

This 10 year old FS Rottweiller dog presented with acute onset seizure activity.

Physical exam – No significant changes. Suspicious for mass in abdominal cavity.

Image Interpretation

CT of the head, plain and post contrast – There is no evidence of structural abnormality of the brain parenchyma on the pre- and post-contrast series.
Both nasal passages reveal mild rostrally localized thickening of the turbinate’s mucosal lining within the range of the normal nasal cycle. There is no evidence of nasal turbinate destruction. The facial bones are within normal limits.
The tympanic bullae and auditory canals are within normal limits. The lymph nodes of the head are within normal limits.
There is mild emerging generalized periodontal disease and bone atrophy affecting all jaw quadrants.
Both globes and remainder of orbital structures are within normal limits.

DX

The computed tomographic findings are compatible with mild generalized periodontal disease with emerging jaw bone atrophy.

Outcome

There are no structural abnormalities of the brain parenchyma. An underlying cause to the clinical presentation is not detected. This does not rule out a number of physical or functional brain disorders including temporal lobe atrophy or hippocampus sclerosis which is a common reason for advanced age onset seizural activity. The CT should be complemented by examination of CSF.
