This 14 year old MN Labrador dog has a history of change in abdominal size and shape with inappropriate urine leaking. A large abdominal mass was palpated on physical exam.

Image Interpretation

The caudal abdomen revealed a mesenteric abscess with attenuating sound beam and suspended debris. The abscess appears to be encapsulated and measures 28 cm in width. The abscess was impinging upon the apex of the bladder wall and deviated regional structures. Micropolypoid changes were noted. This is a frequent finding in older animals and may be linked to a history of chronic urinary tract infection or active urinary tract infection.

DX

Large mesenteric abscess / infarcted lipoma

Outcome

The mass does not appear to be neoplastic. Immediate exploratory surgery was recommended in this patient. Urinalysis would be recommended with culture if any evidence of
inflammatory sediment is present, as this is a frequent finding in older animals and may be linked to a history of chronic urinary tract infection or active urinary tract infection.

Sampling

Needle aspiration revealed opalescent,
non-odorous fluid. Stained cytology revealed poorly differentiated cellular debris.
